Niclaus Manuel Deutsch, St. Eligius in the Workshop of Abbo

1515
Museum of Fine Arts, Bern, Switzerland

St. Eligius is the man on the left with the halo. The object he is working is a chalice. Dado of Rouen's Life of St. Eligius does not actually say that the saint made chalices, just that he learned the goldsmith's trade in the Limoges workshop of a master named Abbo. However, this painter and several artists before him do use a golden chalice as a way of picturing his original profession.
